Course Overview

The performance appraisal or review conversation has the potential to be a truly motivational and engaging process for both manager and team member, when handled well.

 

Unfortunately, in the experience of many team members (and managers), it is a one-way conversation, focussing on out of date objectives, and areas of under-performance, rather than being balanced and supportive.

 

This course will show those new to appraisal reviews – as well as those who’ve being doing them for some time -  how to conduct an effective review for both parties

 

Course objectives

By the end of this course delegates will be able to:

  • Structure and plan the appraisal meeting
  • Identify the key skills required to conduct an effective review
  • Understand the need for evidencing of performance to support the discussion.

Course content

  • The importance of planning (notice of meeting; location; seating arrangements, collecting and using supporting evidence)
  • Agreeing Objectives (SMARTER objectives; maintenance, development and personal growth objectives)
  • Appraisal Skills (2 way conversation; using appropriate questioning & listening skills; recognising and praising performance, dealing with areas for improvement; listening and giving feedback; agreeing a way forward)
